The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a report released today that yesterday it attacked the train station in the city of Malin, about 110 kilometers west of Kiev, with “high-precision, sea-based long-range missiles.” The mayor, Oleksandr Sytailo, said at least one station worker was killed and three others were injured. Local residents were also affected.

According to the Russian Defense, the attack was aimed at destroying “weapons and military equipment” destined for the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists live. Today, on the 89th day of the war, Russia also said it had hit at least four Ukrainian command centers as well as arms depots. The Russians are also said to have attacked Ukrainian planes.

Three months

British Ministry of Defense intelligence assessed that in this three-month war, Russia demonstrated “a combination of poor low-level tactics, limited air coverage, lack of flexibility and a command approach ready to consolidate failures and repeat mistakes”.

This set would have resulted in the deaths of Russian soldiers, which for Britain was likely “similar to what the Soviet Union experienced during its nine-year war in Afghanistan.” At that time there were about 15,000 casualties.

According to Ukraine, in the current conflict, Russian-backed warfare on Ukrainian soil would have killed about 29,200 Russian fighters. The Russian government usually does not disclose the number.

According to the British, who were allies of the Ukrainians, “the Russian people were sensitive to the losses suffered in wars in the past”. “As casualties in Ukraine continue to increase, these will become more pronounced and the public’s dissatisfaction with the war and their willingness to express it may increase.”
