The first of three charter flights that will carry Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of Canada is scheduled to land Monday afternoon in Manitoba.
The flight is scheduled to land around 2:00 pm at Winnipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Sean Fraser said the three flights are expected to help bring the approximately 92,000 Ukrainians approved for emergency stay to Canada. Two weeks ago, Minister Fraser said he expected that number to continue to rise.
The second flight will depart for Montreal from Poland on May 29 and the third, bound for Halifax, will depart on June 2.
These charter flights are in addition to commercial options, financed by a special fund, available to Ukrainians fleeing the war.
The Government of Canada has already allowed the arrival of thousands of Ukrainians since the first attack by Russian military forces in late February.
Manitoba said refugees will be taken to the province’s Ukrainian refugee reception center to receive settlement assistance upon arrival.
