The new pro-Russian authorities in Ukraine’s Kherson region, which was conquered by Moscow on Monday, have established the Russian ruble as the official currency, which will circulate alongside the Ukrainian hryvnia.

“The region is now becoming a dual currency zone: the ruble will be in circulation at the same time as the hryvnia. Businesses and entrepreneurs can advertise prices in both currencies,” said the pro-Russian civil and military administration in this region in southern Ukraine. .

“Two rubles for one grivnia in exchange rate,” he said in a statement posted on his Telegram account.

The management added that the first branch of a Russian bank will open “very soon” in the capital of the region, Kherson, and that “any entrepreneurs who want to” can open an account.

In late April, a local official assured that the ruble and hryvnia could be in circulation during the transition period, before the full transition to the Russian currency; this was a possibility not mentioned by the pro-Russian regional government on Monday.

However, local and Russian officials have raised the possibility that the entire region could become part of Russia.

Kherson became the first city occupied by the Russians on March 3, after the start of the offensive against Ukraine on February 24.
