The process has been underway for several weeks and to date, 30 people, mostly women and children, have been at one stage or another in the process. Three are awaiting approval for their visas and 11 others have received them, but they will need to stamp their passports in order to board Canada.

We are waiting on several levels. Frustrating sometimes. That’s the government, we can’t do much, but many have already passed the biometrics, sent their passports and travel documents, just waiting to be stamped.explains Rebecca Perron, who manages the Entraide Ukraine Abitibi-Témiscamingue group with her mother and aunt.

Rebecca Perron with a microphone addressed the march participants.

He expects to see the first files completed this week.

We look forward to welcoming them. Those we know, we can’t wait to see them again, hug them, but we can’t wait for them. Because even though many of them are safe abroad, their lives are on hold. Yes, they are safe, but they cannot start their lives right away. They can’t wait to get back to normal life, get an education, get a job, and start their little life.said Rebecca Perron.

From support to acceptance

The intercultural association La Mosaïque is ready to support the reception and integration of Ukrainian nationals, as required by its mission.

Ariane Milot also spoke to participants in the march in front of the Place de la citoyenne in Rouyn-Noranda.

We will also support the families who receive these families, to make sure everything is in order. We also want to support citizen initiatives that will result from this. We are also there to train these people, to highlight issues and talk to them. We are also involved with the Entraide Ukraine group to ensure that this whole process goes smoothly, and people will find a safe home here where they feel good.reasoning by Ariane Milot, coordinator of reception and integration services at La Mosaïque.
