North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the funeral of his mentor, Field Marshal Hyon Chol Hae, on Sunday and carried the coffin without a mask, days after Pyongyang announced that the Covid-19 outbreak was under control.
Marshal Hyon is commemorated as a pivotal figure who prepared him to take power before the death of his father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il, in 2011.
North Korean news agency released unmasked photos of Kim carrying the coffin with a group of masked personnel.
The North Korean leader declared the negligence of public officials in the response to covid after the first cases emerged in May and said he had taken control of the epidemic.
Over the weekend, the official KCNA news agency said the outbreak was “stably under control” and reported that the death rate was “decreasing significantly every day.”
Experts question official data and case records, given that the country has one of the worst healthcare systems in the world, with no drugs and no mass testing.
