New photos of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson drinking at a farewell party at his official residence on Downing Street have been published, rekindling accusations from the British opposition that the monarch is violating his own Covid-19 quarantine rules.
The footage, obtained by ITV News, was filmed at a meeting to honor then-Downing Street Communications Director Lee Cain, who stepped down in November 2020, an event that has previously been investigated by police for potential violations of the law.
Photos from Monday show Johnson holding a half-full glass in a speech and asking for a toast, ITV reported.
At the time, large gatherings with people outside one’s own residence were prohibited after the UK re-entered a national quarantine regime due to the rise in Covid-19 cases.
Reuters was unable to independently confirm when and where the photos were taken. Johnson’s office said police had access to all information, including photos, during the investigation.
Johnson was not fined for attending the event in November 2020, but said that despite receiving a fixed penalty notice for a meeting to celebrate his birthday in Downing Street in June of the same year, it did not last more than 10 minutes.
The prime minister apologized for what he called a mistake, but refused to resign because of the problem.
