US and 20 other countries pledge new military aid to Ukraine

The US government announced on Monday (23) that at a meeting on the war launched by Russia, it is making new military aid to Ukraine from nearly 20 countries, including Italy in Ramstein, Germany.

The measure was issued by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin following a meeting of the Washington-led group of Western nations against the conflict.

Speaking to the press, the Pentagon chief thanked Italy for its commitment to providing new military aid to Ukraine, along with Greece, Norway, Poland and Denmark.

According to Austin, the Danish government will provide missiles and launchers specifically to defend the Ukrainian coast. “Everybody risks [da guerra na Ucrânia] “Go far beyond Europe because the Russian invasion is an insult to the rules-based international order.”

Meanwhile, Chief of Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, commented on whether the Joe Biden administration is planning to send troops to guard the US Embassy in Kiev. “These are decisions the president has to make, but no plan has yet been drawn up or presented to the secretary of defense,” he said.

The second virtual meeting of the contact group on Ukraine was attended by countries that did not participate in the first, such as “Austria, Bosnia, Kosovo and Colombia”. There were 47 countries in total.

A new summit will be held in Brussels on 15 June on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ministerial meeting.

Taiwan – At the press conference, the Pentagon leader also announced that “American China policy has not changed”. The statement comes after Biden pledged to defend Taiwan’s military should the Chinese government try to take control of the autonomous island by force.

“The President underlined our determination to provide Taiwan with the tools to defend itself,” Austin said.
