One of the Russian government’s top diplomats has demanded that sanctions against Moscow be lifted to prevent a global food crisis as Ukraine’s grain exports have been disrupted since the start of the Russian offensive.
“Solving the food problem requires a comprehensive perspective, which means, above all, the end of sanctions on Russian exports and financial transactions,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko.
He also demanded that Kiev “remove mines” from the Black Sea ports so that ships could export grain. The diplomat said Russia was willing to “guarantee a humanitarian corridor” for ships.
Before the war, Ukraine was the world’s fourth largest exporter of corn and third exporter of wheat.
The conflict disrupted trade and agriculture. Russia is accused by Ukraine and Western countries of blocking grain exports via the Black Sea, which increases the risk of a serious global food crisis.
