The perpetrator of the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, announced on Facebook that he planned to attack a school about 15 minutes before he opened fire, the state governor added on Wednesday, adding that the weapon used was an AR-Assault rifle.
The social network quickly announced that the attacker had posted these alerts as part of Facebook’s private messaging app, so the messages were not discovered until after the tragedy.
According to Abbott, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos repeatedly issued warnings that he was going to shoot his grandmother, then another stated that he had already shot.
“The third message, probably less than 15 minutes before I got to school, was ‘I’m going to set fire to an elementary school,'” Abbott said at a news conference.
The governor added that Ramos, a high school student who was eventually killed by police, used an extremely deadly weapon, an assault rifle.
Andy Stone, spokesman for Facebook’s parent company Meta, said Facebook was “cooperating fully” with the police investigating the massacre.
Abbott detailed Tuesday’s attack: “The first thing that happened was the gunman shot the grandmother in the face.”
“Then he applied to the police. The gunman fled and ran to school after being in a (vehicle) accident in front of the primary school while escaping.”
“Officers … confronted the gunman at this point. The gunman then entered through a back door and went through two short corridors, then into a classroom on the left,” Abbott said.
