The 19 children and two teachers killed at a Texas elementary school were in a single classroom in the fourth grade the gunman entered, officials said Wednesday, the deadliest US school shooting in the US in nearly a decade, rekindling the debate about gun laws in the country.
Chris Olivarez, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, told CNN that police surrounded Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, breaking windows to evacuate children and staff. Police invaded the classroom and killed the hitman, whose identity was 18-year-old Salvador Ramos.
Authorities said Ramos began his attack by shooting the grandmother, crashing her car, and entering the school with tactical gear and a rifle.
Olivarez told MSNBC that state and federal investigators are still working to determine the attacker’s motive. He told Fox News that several children were also injured, although an exact number is not available.
The attack, which came 10 days after an outspoken white supremacist shot 13 people at a supermarket in the predominantly black Buffalo neighborhood, prompted President Joe Biden to call for stricter gun control laws in a speech to the North American public.
As a nation, we should ask when we will stand up to the gun lobby, for God’s sake.”
Biden ordered the flags to be lowered at half-mast by sundown on Saturday due to the tragedy.
The Texas shooting was the bloodiest since a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012.
