A “humiliated” Boris Johnson said he took full responsibility after a harsh official report in the British prime minister’s Downing Street office on Wednesday detailing a series of illegal alcohol-powered parties during the Covid-19 quarantine.
Johnson has faced repeated calls from opposition politicians and some in his own party to step down after it was revealed that he and officials violated rules that prevent people from socializing outside their homes, and in many cases even attending the funerals of loved ones.
“I take full responsibility for everything that is at my disposal,” Johnson told the British Parliament in London.
Senior official Sue Gray’s report did not specifically blame Johnson, but provided graphic details and included photographs of more than a dozen meetings, some of which she attended.
Johnson was among those fined for a party to celebrate his 56th birthday on June 19, 2020, but Gray said he did not know about the meeting in advance.
Johnson, who prepared the report after it was revealed that socializing on Downing Street was nearly banned under strict laws his government had put in place to contain Covid-19, said he was shocked by some of the behavior that has emerged.
He told Parliament to boo him from the opposition seats, “I feel humiliated and have learned a lesson.”
Gray’s tentative findings were published in January, but most details were withheld until the end of a separate police investigation that ended last week with a $126 fine.
