A magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook southern Peru on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey, and There is an alert for possible aftershocks.
Earthquake it occurred at 7:02 and had its epicenter at 13.1 kilometers east-south-east of Azángaro, but it is very deep, 217.8 kilometers below the surface, on the border with Bolivia.
Peru’s National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) tweeted that the quake was felt “between moderate and strong population”and so far no injuries have been reported.
In a subsequent statement, COEN reported that, according to local authorities, the quake was felt in the districts of Ayaviri, Asillo and Azángaroand it is “in the moderate sense in the districts of Orurillo, Pucará, Tirapata and San José, province of Melgar”.
The agency also added that vulnerable areas continue to be monitored, but they have already issued an alert to the local population.
