McDonald’s said today it plans to reopen its restaurants in Russia under a new brand starting June 12. The move comes after the group announced the suspension of its activities in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
According to local media, McDonald’s reported that the new brand will operate separately from the parent company. McDonald’s branded restaurants in Russia started to be dismantled this week.
While McDonald’s announced the closure of all its locations in Russia, “The humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and the resulting unpredictable work environment makes it no longer sustainable for McDonald’s to have a business in Russia or does it fit McDonald’s values”.
The first McDonald’s restaurant in Russia opened 30 years ago. The departure of the group carries great symbolic and economic weight, as McDonald’s was one of the first Western brands to establish itself in Moscow shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
McDonald’s presence in Russia has become a symbol of the end of the Cold War.
