The father of 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, who killed 21 people at a school in Uvalde, Texas, said he was sorry for what his son had done.
The statement was given in an interview with The Daily Beast website last Thursday (26) two days after the numerous shootings at a US high school.
“I want people to know that I’m sorry for what my son did,” said the attacker’s father, 42, also known as Salvador Ramos.
“I never expected my son to do something like that. He should have killed me instead of doing something like that to anyone else, you know,” he added.
Last Tuesday (24), young Salvador Ramos shot his grandmother in the face and went to Robb Basic School in Uvalde, opened fire on fourth graders and killed 19 students and two teachers.
The attacker was later killed in a shootout with the police. The crime was committed with two legally purchased rifles when the young man turned 18, rekindling the debate over the ease of access to firearms in the United States.
Ramos’ father was working that day and only learned of the massacre when his mother called and told him.
“I will never see my son again, just like them [os pais das vítimas] they won’t see theirs anymore and it hurts me,” adding that Ramos is a “good person” and doesn’t know what motivated the crime.
He also told The Daily Beast that he hadn’t spoken to his son in about a month. “My mom said she’d probably shoot me too because she said I didn’t love her,” she said.
The father also concluded that he did not want his son to be portrayed as “a monster”. “They don’t know anything, man. They don’t know anything about what’s been going on,” he said.
