Turkey has called for “concrete” actions by Finland and Sweden to support the candidacy of the two Scandinavian countries for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Helsinki and Stockholm have applied for NATO membership, abandoning their historic policy of military neutrality due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but they need unanimous approval from member states to enter the Euro-Atlantic alliance.
“If you want to be part of the alliance, [Finlândia e Suécia] Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said at a press conference with his Polish and Romanian counterparts in Istanbul on Friday, that they should cut ties with terrorism.
In addition, the chancellor called for “concrete actions” in relation to “terrorist groups” from the two Scandinavian countries.
Ankara accuses Helsinki and Stockholm of sheltering militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a movement that fought to establish a Kurdish state and is considered a terrorist organization by the Turkish government.
Last Wednesday (25), delegations from Finland and Sweden went to the Turkish capital to discuss the issue, but no tangible progress was made in the talks.
