Former Chelsea owner, Russian Roman Abramovich, broke the silence and spoke about the sale of the English team, which became official this Saturday. The deal, jointly run by a group led by American businessman Todd Boehly, has already been ratified by the British government and the Premier League.

In a statement made by the club itself, Abramovich said goodbye to the Stamford Bridge team and said he was pleased with the completion of the process.

“It has been a lifetime honor to be a part of this club. I want to thank all the players, staff and of course the club’s fans past and present for these wonderful years,” said the former owner.

“I am pleased that this investigation has had a successful conclusion. I wish them success on and off the pitch as they hand over Chelsea to their new manager,” he said.

On 7 May, Boehly made a £4.25bn bid to buy the London club owned by oligarch Abramovich, which paid out £140m in 2003.

Earlier, Chelsea released a statement confirming that it has “a final and definitive agreement to sell the club to Todd Boehly’s consortium”. The trend is for the trade to be completed next Monday.

Check out the full statement released by Chelsea below:

“It has been almost three months since I announced my intention to sell Chelsea. During this time the team worked hard to find the right manager for Chelsea who would be in the best position to successfully lead the club into the next division.

Ownership of this club entails great responsibility. Ever since I came to Chelsea almost two decades ago, I have witnessed firsthand what this club can achieve. My goal was to ensure that the next owner has a mindset that allows the success of the men’s and women’s team, as well as the will and drive to continue improving other important aspects of the club, such as the Academy and the vital work of the club. Chelsea Foundation.

I am pleased that this research has come to a successful conclusion. I wish them success on and off the pitch as they hand over Chelsea to their new manager.

It was a lifetime honor to be a part of this club. I would like to thank all the players, staff and of course the club’s fans past and present for these wonderful years.

I am proud that millions of people will now benefit from the new charitable foundation being established as a result of our shared achievements. This is the legacy we created together. Thank you!”.
