The Vatican, MAY 29 (ANSA) – Pope Francis announced this Sunday (29th) that he will hold a council on August 27 to create 21 new cardinals, including two Brazilians.
The list includes 16 abbots who could attend a possible meeting, and five people over the age of 80 to vote in the election of a pope.
Brazil’s new cardinals will be the archbishops of Brasilia Paulo Cezar Costa and the archbishop of Manaus Leonardo Ulrich Steiner. With this, Brazil will have nine members in the College of Cardinals, six of which are electors. Only Italy, the United States and Spain have more cardinals.
“Let us pray for the new cardinals, and they will assist me in my mission as Bishop of Rome for the good of all God’s holy faithful people, affirming their devotion to Christ,” said the Pope.
Italy currently has 44 and will gain five more: Oscar Cantoni, bishop of Como; Giorgio Marengo, apostolic governor of Ulan Bator (Mongolia); Arrigo Miglio, honorary bishop of Cagliari; former rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University Gianfranco Garlanda; and the Canon of St. Peter, Fortunato Frezza.
The United States will have another one with 15: Robert McElroy, Bishop of San Diego. Along with 11 cardinals, Spain will receive another one: Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, head of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican Province.
Other new cardinals are British Arthur Roche, prefect of the Divine Worship Congregation; South Korean Lazarus You Heung-sik, governor of the Clergy; French Jean-Marc Aveline, Archbishop of Marseille; Nigerian Peter Okpaleke, Bishop of Ekwulobia; Indians Filipe Neri António Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman and Archbishop of Hyderabad Anthony Poola; Timor Virgilio do Carmo da Silva, Archbishop of Dili; Ghanaian Richard Kuuia Baawobr, Archbishop of Wa; Archbishop of Singapore William Goh Seng Chye of Singapore; Paraguayan Adalberto Martínez Flores, Archbishop of Asunción; Colombian Jorge Enrique Jiménez Carvajal, Honorary Archbishop of Cartagena; and Belgian Lucas Van Looy, Honorary Archbishop of Ghent.
