The U.S. Department of Justice said on Sunday it would review police response to the shooting at the school in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers, amid growing anger over why police did not quickly confront the attacker.
Law enforcement in Uvalde allowed the gunman to stay in a classroom at Robb Elementary School for nearly an hour as police waited in the hallway and children inside panicked 911 to call for help.
Texas state and county officials say they are conducting their own investigations. Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said that at the request of the mayor of Uvalde, police would conduct a “Critical Incident Investigation” of their response to the attack.
“The purpose of the review is to identify lessons learned and best practices to provide an independent account of the actions and reactions of law enforcement that day, and to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooting incidents,” Coley said. Said.
“The Department of Justice will release a report containing its findings at the end of its review,” Coley said.
