Five people were killed and one of the drivers was arrested for being drunk when two pleasure boats collided head-on on the Georgia river this long Memorial Day weekend, state officials said on Sunday.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirmed that two people died in the immediate aftermath of the crash Saturday morning. Four passengers were injured and taken to the hospital, while three more were reported missing.
Georgia and U.S. Coast Guard divers pulled the bodies of the three victims Sunday from the bottom of the Wilmington River near the coastal city of Savannah, the department said.
The Coast Guard said divers removed the bodies of a 37-year-old man and two 20-year-old men, who were last seen wearing swimsuits and shirtless. The guard said they were found 4.3 meters below the ground and close to each other.
Mark Christopher Stegall, 45, of the city of Savannah, was “arrested for driving the boat while intoxicated at the time of the incident,” the department said in a statement. “The cause of the accident is unknown and is being investigated,” he said.
