A journalist died in Honduras a few days after being shot on Sunday, the fourth journalist in the country to be killed since the beginning of this year and number 97 since 2001.
“Ricardo Alcides Avila, 25, died in a hospital in Tegucigalpa,” after being shot in the head on Wednesday, Amada Ponce, executive director of the Freedom of Expression Committee (‘C-Libre’), told AFP. men in the south of the country.
Ponce stated that he is a journalist and cameraman for the Metro television and radio channel in the city of Choluteca, 85 km south of the capital, Avila.
“On the morning of May 26, he left his home in the Santa Cruz area to work in Choluteca and was stopped by unidentified men who shot him at close range,” he said.
Ávila was transferred to a hospital in the capital. Hours later, the police revealed that he was the victim of a common criminal act.
“C-Libre was able to confirm that this was not a robbery. At the crime scene, 9,000 lempira (about US$367), cell phone, personal documents, keys and the motorcycle (on which he was traveling) were found completely unharmed.” said Ponce.
According to C-Libre, the murder took place in the southern region of the country “because of Ricardo’s work in connection with the (…) social movements”.
Amada Ponde said that a few days before her injury, Avila told her co-workers that she had to replace her phone because she believed she had been “hacked”.
