A total of 89 animals have died this year at the Vesty Pakos biopark in the city of La Paz, one of Bolivia’s main zoos, with City Hall announcing Monday (30) the site’s restructuring.

“Today we have the exact number, let’s not guess: There are 89 dead animals in this place, 65 of which are reptiles,” said José Antonio Gonzales, the legal director of the city of La Paz at a press conference.

In recent days, versions have circulated about the deaths of at least a hundred animals due to mismanagement of Vesty Pakos, which is located at an altitude of about 3,200 kilometers south of La Paz. The temperate climate enclosure covers 22 hectares.

About 520 animals live in Vesty Pakos. The biopark aims to take or save animals of endangered species and then return them to their natural habitat.

The city of La Paz, which manages the biopark, ordered its closure for 15 days on Friday and asked environmental agencies and professional bodies to assess what happened.

The legal director explained that “the first recommendation was to completely renovate the biopark” and to evaluate staff responsible for maintaining the species.
