Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday urged European Union (EU) countries to end “internal disagreements” in favor of “more unity” that would allow the imposition of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia.
Speaking via video conference at the EU summit in Brussels, Zelensky said, “It is necessary to end all the blood feuds in Europe, the internal conflicts that encourage Russia to put more pressure on you.”
“Russia should show European power because it only understands power as an argument,” he said.
“Only in greater unity can we find effective answers to everything Russia has done against us and against you,” Zelensky said.
Ukraine’s president has urged EU member states to vote for a new wave of sanctions “including oil” against Russia. “It’s clear that there needs to be progress on sanctions,” he said.
Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, a country heavily dependent on Russian oil, has previously warned that “at the moment there is no consensus” among EU leaders on the proposed Russian oil embargo.
“Unfortunately, for some reason I don’t understand, we’re not there yet,” Zelensky complained during the video conference.
According to him, Russia does not want to see the European Union united, but to see “27 states divided, 27 parts cannot come together”.
Regarding Ukraine’s candidacy for EU membership, which has caused disagreements among bloc leaders, Zelensky said he is “confident” that “quiet states (…) will change their minds”.
