Ukraine Prosecutor’s Office announced that the first rape case against a woman in the war started by Russia was brought to court and will be tried soon.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Iryna Venicetova said on Twitter that the defendants were “Mikhail Romanov, a soldier of the 239th Regiment of the 90th Armored Division of the Russian Armed Forces Vitebsk-Novgorod Guards.”

According to him, the man “will be prosecuted for allegedly killing the Ukrainian husband and for group sexual violence against his wife”.

Venicetova explained that the Russian army was part of the group that attacked the cities and villages around Kyiv where the crimes were allegedly committed.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General stated in his social media post that Romanov has not been caught so far and therefore he should not be present at the hearing. Even if convicted in this way, the Russian will not be punished.

Venicetova said Romanov and other Russian soldiers “entered a house in one of the villages and opened fire on its owner.” Right after the murder, a drunken soldier raped his wife several times, along with another occupant.”

The burglary of the house in Brovary, which is part of the Kyiv region, was reported to have taken place in March. Even her son, who was with her at the time, was threatened with guns and violence,” the woman said.

According to Ukrainian authorities, “The accused will not be able to evade a fair trial and responsibility before the law, even if it is not currently in our hands.”

In an interview with “The Guardian” newspaper in early May, Venicetova suggested that the soldier might have been sent, emphasizing that the victim was able to identify Romanov from photos on social media and that the Ukrainian authorities did not know what had happened to him. They returned to Russia, still fighting or being killed in Ukraine.

The new case comes after another Russian soldier, Vadim Shishimarin, 21, was found guilty of murdering an elderly Ukrainian in Kiev and was sentenced to life in prison in the first war crimes trial.
