European Council President Charles Michel said the 27 member states of the European Union had reached an agreement to ban Russian oil exports to the bloc. “This immediately covers more than 2/3 of Russia’s oil imports and cuts off a major source of funding for the war machine,” the European leader said on social media.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, praised the agreement. “This will effectively reduce about 90 percent of Russia’s oil imports to the EU by the end of this year,” he said.
Other measures in the new sanctions package include the withdrawal of Sberbank, one of Russia’s largest banks, from the Swift international payment system, the banning of three more Russian state broadcasters, and sanctions on those held responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.
