The governor of the Luhansk region, where the city is located, announced on Tuesday that he controls “part” of the city of Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have been attacking for several weeks.

“The situation is very complex. Part of Severodonetsk is controlled by the Russians,” Governor Serguii Gaidai told Telegram.

Gaidai added that despite the Russian advance, Ukrainian forces “remained in the city” and Russian troops “could not move freely”.

“The enemy is planning an operation to clear nearby places,” he said.

Having failed to take control of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, in the early days of the conflict, Russia is now focusing its efforts on the eastern Donbass region and trying to consolidate the areas under its control.

With a pre-war population of about 100,000, Severodonetsk is one of the few major urban centers on its way to capture the entire Luhansk region of Russia and Kramatorsk, the administrative center of eastern Ukraine.
