“This transport hub is very important for Donbass,” said Pushilin. It is a very important port on the Azov Sea and the only port where it is possible to load all kinds of goods even in winter.”

The pro-Russian leader said that some of the ships in the port of Mariupol will become part of the merchant fleet of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Republic (DNR).

Mariupol port, located on the Sea of Azov and connected to the Black Sea, was the second most important civilian port in Ukraine after Odessa before the Russian military offensive.

The infrastructure has allowed large-scale exports of Ukrainian grain, which has been blocked in the country by the conflict, which threatens to provoke a world food crisis.

The Kremlin announced the conquest of Mariupol on April 21, after nearly two months of warfare that resulted in the destruction of much of the city.

However, the last Ukrainian defenders stationed at the Azovstal steelworks surrendered just a month after the announcement.
