COPENHAGEN, MAY 31 (ANSA) – Energy company Orsted announced today (31) that Russia will cut off gas supplies to Denmark from June 1 at 6 a.m. local time.
The move comes after the Danish company refused to pay Russia for Russian gas in rubles.
“Since there is no direct gas pipeline from Russia to Denmark, Moscow will not be able to directly stop the gas supply to our country, and thus gas supply will be possible. However, this allows gas to be supplied to Denmark. Orsted said in a statement that it can be purchased largely from the European market.
With the decision, Denmark joined four other countries (Poland, Bulgaria, Finland and the Netherlands) that cut off Russian gas, which refused to pay in rubles.
Yesterday, Orsted warned that Russia could shut down gas as it will continue to pay for gas supplies in euros. According to the Danish company, “there is no legal obligation” [de pagar em rublos] under the contract”.
According to the company, Russian gas accounts for 18% of Denmark’s energy consumption in a year.
