Regional governor Sergii Gaïdaï announced that a “nitric acid tank” at a chemical plant in eastern Ukraine’s Severodonetsk was hit by a Russian attack on Tuesday, urging residents not to leave their air raid shelters.

“Do not leave the bunkers” and “prepare protective masks,” the governor wrote to Telegram, noting that nitric acid can in particular damage the lungs and cause vision loss.

According to pro-Russian separatist leaders, the tank “exploded” in an area controlled by Ukrainian forces.

“A tank full of chemicals exploded at the nitrogen chemical plant. In principle, it’s nitric acid,” Rodion Mironchik, the self-proclaimed “Republican” leader of Lugansk, told Telegram.

Ukrainian local officials said on Tuesday that the Russian military controls “most” of Severodonetsk, the last major city in the Luhansk region not under Moscow’s control.
