Zelensky thanks EU for imposing new sanctions on Russia

ROME, MAY 31 (ANSA) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky Tuesday (31) thanked the European Union (EU) for announcing the sixth package of sanctions against Russia due to the war in his country.

“Finally, we have the details of the sixth package of European Union sanctions against Russia for this war. The basic elements of the package and above all its direction are already clear,” the Ukrainian leader said in his speech published by Telegram. .

Explaining that “European countries have decided to significantly limit Russian oil imports,” Zelensky thanked “everyone who worked to reach this agreement.”

The practical result is tens of billions of euros less that Russia cannot currently use to finance terrorism,” he said.

Yesterday, Ukraine’s president put pressure on EU countries, urging leaders to end “internal disagreements” in favor of “more unity” to allow the new package of sanctions against Moscow to be implemented.

After a long discussion, the bloc’s leaders made concessions to Hungary so that Russia could reach an agreement to ban oil exports to the EU.

The new sanctions package includes, among other measures, the withdrawal of Sberbank, one of Russia’s largest banks, from the Swift international payment system, the banning of three more Russian state broadcasters, and fines for those held responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.
