Gazprom said on Tuesday 31 that it would cut gas supplies after Denmark’s Oersted and Shell refused to pay in rubles. The Russian state-owned giant said its deliveries will be suspended from June 1 and until payments are made in rubles.
According to Gazprom, a maximum annual contract of 1.2 billion cubic meters was concluded with Shell. A Shell spokesperson added that the company does not agree to the stated terms, including the creation of capital accounts, but that the company will continue to ship gas to customers in Europe, without specifying which countries it usually receives these volumes from.
Oersted said in a statement that he does not have to pay in rubles and will continue to pay for the gas he buys in euros. The company says it is already preparing for this scenario and will continue to deliver to customers.
On Monday, Gazprom announced that it is cutting deliveries to Dutch company GasTerra, too, for refusing to pay in rubles.
According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), the European Union imported 155 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia in 2021, accounting for about 40% of its total gas consumption.
