Moscow officials have warned that new US shipments of weapons to Ukraine, including the multi-barrel rocket system, raise the risk of a military confrontation between Russia and the US.
“Any ongoing or increased delivery of weapons increases the risk of such an event,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the RIA Novosti news agency when asked about a possible armed conflict between Washington and Moscow.
The US government announced on Tuesday the delivery of HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) systems, which allow multiple rocket launches and have a range of 80 kilometers, to Ukraine.
While they are not long-range systems, they represent a significant strengthening of Ukraine’s capabilities.
These weapons are part of a new $700 million US military aid battery, details of which will be announced this Wednesday.
Since the beginning of the conflict, US President Joe Biden has been careful not to provide military aid to Ukraine that would turn the US into a belligerent nation.
