At least eight people have died in Sri Lanka, who have been queuing for hours for fuel.
Crop shortages are caused by high inflation and the melting of the country’s international reserves, leading to a shortage of other essential products such as medicine and food.
86-year-old SM Enganona lost her son Chaminda, a bus driver, and collapsed while waiting for her turn for fuel. According to the autopsy, the cause of death was a heart attack.
Chaminda Kumara is married and has two children.
Sri Lankan police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said there are no studies confirming the total number of deaths caused by fuel queues.
Public Safety Minister Tiran Allles explains that he cannot confirm that waiting in long lines was the sole cause of death, as some people may have pre-existing illnesses.
