The independent National Indemnity and Compensation Corporation (Inirr) announced on Wednesday that victims of pedophiles in the French church can receive compensation of up to 60,000 euros (approximately R$305,300).

Inirr president, Marie Derain de Vaucresson, said 736 victims had contacted them as of May 31, and half of them “necessarily” sought monetary compensation.

He pointed out that this compensation “has no minimum value” but can go up to “a maximum of 60,000 euros”, which is in the “upper range of civil justice compensation”.

An independent commission estimated in October that priests and clergy molested 216,000 minors between 1950 and 2020, which would rise to 330,000 when laity working in religious institutions were taken into account.

Commissioned by the Episcopal Conference (CEF) and the Religion of Men and Women of France (Corref), this investigation represented an earthquake in this secular country, work in progress now with the issue of compensation.

Inirr, which is responsible for managing the claims of victims of priests and laity, is in line with the Recognition and Compensation Commission (CRR) initiated by religious communities, which provides the same maximum amount.

To calculate the value, the first determines three axes based on a scale of 1 to 10: the severity of the abuse, the Church’s “failures”, and its consequences on physical, mental, and social health.

Before the diocese-created fund Selam starts to pay out, a commission of 12 experts from different specialties will analyze the request and determine the value. Derain de Vaucresson has announced that the top 10 will hit bottom on June 10.
