The Texas Department of Homeland Security will lead the investigation into the tragedy, according to sources heard by broadcaster “ABC”.

The decision to withdraw local police forces from the investigation was made last Friday (27), due to errors in the operation to arrest Salvador Ramos, responsible for the attack on the Texas city elementary school.

Colonel Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Homeland Security, said at a press conference that Uvalde’s agents had made a grave mistake by not quickly entering the classroom where the killer had barricaded himself.

Relatives of the 21 people killed in the attack are seeking an in-depth investigation to determine why it took so long to stop the 18-year-old assailant as police waited more than an hour at the school before taking action.

At the age of 18, Ramos killed 19 children and two teachers with two assault rifles he had legally acquired.
