The China Seismic Network Center (CENC) said the quake in Lushan Province was followed three minutes later by another 4.5-magnitude earthquake in neighboring Baoxing Province.

The latest report shows “one dead, one seriously injured and five lightly injured,” public broadcaster CCTV reported.

Hundreds of doctors, firefighters, soldiers, rescue workers and police mobilized to search and rescue, care for the injured, clear roads and transport residents to safety.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) calculated the magnitude of the earthquake at 5.9 degrees, with the epicenter at a depth of 10 km.

In May 2008, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan left 87,000 people dead or missing.
