One of the Russian negotiators on the conflict in Ukraine told the Ria Novosti news agency this Wednesday (1st) that the Ukrainian territory militarily conquered by Russia could hold a possible annexation referendum from July.
Leonid Slutski, chairman of the Foreign Relations committee of the lower house of the Russian parliament, said: “I don’t want to guess. . . .
“I believe they can happen in July,” said this leader, who is part of the Russian delegation to the peace talks with Ukraine, which have stalled since the end of March.
Russia calls parts of Ukraine militarily conquered by its military and its separatist allies “liberated territories”.
These “liberated regions” include the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions largely controlled by the Russian military.
Russia has established pro-Russian administrations in these areas, granted the ruble as a currency, Russian citizenship to its residents, and established Russian telecommunications networks.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said residents of these four districts “should be able to choose their future”.
