A white teenager accused of shooting and killing 10 black people in a racist attack on a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, was charged Wednesday with domestic terrorism.
Payton Gendron, 18, is also the target of 10 first-degree murders, according to a document posted on the New York state justice system website.
The complaint, which includes 25 charges, alleges Gendron was motivated by hatred when he allegedly killed 10 people and injured three others in a shooting at the Tops Friendly Market supermarket in Buffalo last month.
Other charges include attempted murder and possession of a weapon. He will be due at the Erie County Courthouse at 2 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Thursday, a prosecutor’s spokesperson told AFP.
The teenager, who denied first-degree murder, faces charges for each of the victims, aged 32 to 86.
The crime of domestic terrorism, which entered into force in 2020, carries a life sentence.
Federal officials are also considering bringing a hate crime charge against Gendron.
