Republican lawmakers in the US House on Thursday opposed Democrats’ attempt to impose new restrictions on gun purchases, and a Republican congressman drew a pistol during a hearing to complain they could be banned.

Funerals were held for 19 children and two teachers who were shot and killed by an 18-year-old man in Uvalde, Texas, as the House Judiciary Committee meets for an emergency session during the week-long holiday of the Memorial Day holiday. Republican congressman Greg Steube, who attended the committee meeting virtually from his home in Florida, objected to legislation that would ban multiple handguns. He raised four guns one by one in the presence of the committee.

“Here is a weapon that I carry with me every day to protect myself, to protect my family, my wife and my home,” he said in his second term.

Jerrold Nadler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, interrupted: “I hope this isn’t too full.”

Steube replied, “I’m at home. I can do whatever I want with my guns.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the Democrats, who control the House by a small margin, plan to put the “Protection of Our Children Bill” to a vote in the House next week.

President Joe Biden’s party has enough votes to pass the bill in the House, but its chances are slim in the 50-50 Senate, most of which need 60 votes to pass the bill. Republicans in Congress are fierce advocates of gun rights.
