Ukraine’s deputy secretary general and UN crisis coordinator said on Friday that the war in Ukraine “will not have a winner” as Russia’s invasion has completed 100 days.
“This war has not and will not have a winner,” Amin Awad said in a statement.
“We need peace. The war must end,” added the UN official, at a time when talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled for several weeks.
The Russian invasion, which began on February 24, “has inflicted heavy damage on civilians”, “destruction and destruction of cities and settlements”, as well as the loss of “lives, homes, jobs and hopes” underlines Awad.
For several weeks, Ukrainian and Russian armies clashed in the east of the country, in the Donbass mining basin and in the south, where Moscow spoke of the possibility of holding a referendum on annexing the occupied territories.
Awad said that in less than three months, “almost 14 million Ukrainians, mostly women and children, had to leave their homes”, calling it “an unprecedented phenomenon in history”.
