French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, made a “historic and fundamental mistake” in Ukraine and is “isolated”.
“I think he and I told him he made a historic and fundamental mistake for his people, for himself and for history,” Macron said in an interview with regional media.
Regarding Russia, the head of state assured that it was “still a great people”, but Putin “isolated”. “Self-isolation is one thing, but knowing how to get out of it is a difficult one,” he said.
The Russian offensive in Ukraine completed 100 days on Friday, and the French leader, whose country holds the interim presidency of the European Union (EU), is under pressure to travel to Kiev.
Calling for Ukrainian Defense Minister Dmytro Kuleba to leave before the end of June, Macron said, “I traveled in February to avoid war. I am not excluding anything at the moment.”
After a sudden conflict failed and attacked Kiev, the Russian army is now concentrated in this area, which has been partially controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014.
