On Friday, two Reuters reporters were injured and a driver was killed when their vehicle was attacked on their way to Severodonetsk, Ukraine, which is at the forefront of Russia’s invasion of the neighboring country.

Photographer Alexander Ermochenko and cameraman Pavel Klimov were traveling in a car supplied by Russian-backed forces on the Russian-controlled section of the road between Severodonetsk and the village of Rubizhne, 10 kilometers to the north.

Reuters was unable to immediately identify the driver assigned to Reuters by the separatists for the tip-off. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense did not respond to a call seeking comment on the incident.

Ermochenko and Klimov were taken to a hospital in Rubizhne, where Ermochenko was first treated for a minor shrapnel wound and Klimov’s arm fracture.

“Reuters extends its deepest condolences to the driver’s family,” a Reuters spokesperson said in a statement.

In recent weeks, Russia has focused its forces on the battle of Severodonetsk, a small factory town in eastern Ukraine. Russia seeks his capture to consolidate full control of Luhansk province.

Both sides suffer significant losses in a street-to-street battle in the city that could set the course for a long war.

Moscow describes its presence in Ukraine as a “special military operation” to disarm and “sanitize” Ukraine.
