The leader of the country’s eastern Luhansk region said on Friday that Ukrainian forces have regained about 20 percent of the territory they lost in Sievierodonetsk during the clashes with Russia.
“While the situation was difficult before, it was around 70 percent (controlled by Russia), now we have forced them to withdraw around 20 percent,” Serhiy Gaidai told the national broadcaster.
Russia focused its forces on the battle for the city, which Moscow must take to achieve its goal of dominating the entire Luhansk province. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday that his country’s forces have had some success in the region.
Gaidai claimed that the Russians bombarded Ukrainian positions for hours before advancing, but were forced to retreat by uninjured soldiers, and this situation repeated itself.
“They’re going step by step this way because they’re destroying everything with cannons, planes and mortars,” he said.
“But as soon as we have enough ranged weapons from the West, we will push the artillery away from our positions. And then believe me, the Russian infantry will flee.”
