The US state of Ohio must pass a law allowing teachers and other personnel to carry guns in schools if they complete 24-hour initial training.
Proponents hope that gun teachers will reduce the frequency and lethality of repeated school shootings in the United States. Opponents of the law, such as the teachers’ union and the state’s top police union, say it will make schools more dangerous for children.
The law was concluded ten days after an 18-year-old boy attacked a school in Uvalde, Texas, with an AR-15 rifle. 19 students and two teachers lost their lives in the massacre.
Ohio Republican Governor Mike DeWine said he would sign the bill.
Proponents of the bill said it would allow school officials to confront an armed assailant before police arrive.
The bill passed the Republican-controlled Ohio General Assembly this week. It was designed last year to counter a decision by the Ohio Supreme Court that said a longstanding state law required teachers to complete more than 700 hours of peacekeeper training program before entering school buildings with guns.
Armed teachers would have to pass criminal checks and receive an additional eight hours of training per year.
