Pope Francis this Sunday (5) expressed his solidarity with all those affected by the rains in Pernambuco after authorizing a 30,000-euro transfer to help families affected by the tragedy that killed 128 people.
“I want to assure my prayers for the victims of the landslides caused by the torrential rains that occurred in the Brazilian metropolitan region of Recife,” Francisco said during the reading of Regina Coeli.
The prayer was offered after the Pope made a donation to the Brazilians, after receiving a letter from Dom Fernando Saburido, Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, describing the emergency.
According to the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, the amount will be delivered to Cáritas Arquidiocesana. The initiative came from Monsignor Giambattista Diquattro, of the Apostolic Sisterhood in Brazil, who also called on Saburido to show solidarity with the situation.
“I did. Yesterday, the nun called to confirm that the Pope had allowed a donation of 30,000 euros, which amounted to just over R$150,000, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Caritas,” the Brazilian archbishop told Vatican News.
According to Saburido, “This invaluable help is added to the other gestures of brothers and sisters from Pernambuco, other Brazilian states, and even abroad”.
The tragedy caused by the rains in Pernambuco left 128 dead, most of them in landslides in Greater Recife. The body of the last missing person, 43-year-old Mércia Josefa do Nascimento, was found last Friday (3) in Camaragibe, ending the firefighters’ search for victims of the disaster.
The disaster is considered the second largest in the state’s history due to the total number of victims, leaving 9,302 homeless and 34 cities in emergency.
