Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear power operator Energoatom said on Sunday that a Russian cruise missile was flying at “critical and low altitude” over a major nuclear power plant in the Mykolayiv region.
“It’s likely that it’s a missile fired in the direction of Kyiv,” plant operator Pivdennoukrainska said in a Telegram post.
The agency said in a statement that Russian forces “do not understand that even the smallest fragment of a missile capable of hitting a still-working power supply could cause a nuclear disaster and a loss of radiation.”
“Russia has committed another nuclear terrorist act: At 05:30 am, a cruise missile similar to the ‘Caliber’ missile flew low over the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. I heard it this morning,” Energoatom said.
Pivdennoukrainska is Ukraine’s second largest nuclear power plant, located near Mykolaiv district, about 350 km south of Kiev.
