The incident occurred in catholic church of san francesco located in the city of Owo, in the southwest of the country, where attacks of this type are rare.

A group of five gunmen reportedly entered the parish, he kidnapped the priest and started shooting several people.

After the bloody scene, the survivors said the attackers did detonate an explosive inside the place. Then they went out and ended the massacre with a shooting at people who were walking around the temple.

So far, official sources have confirmed that there are 50 dead from the attack. However, there are numerous injuries, many of whom are receiving medical attention due to the serious injuries sustained.

Likewise, the police have not yet identified those responsible for the shooting or the causes that led to it.

In this sense, the Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, spoke about the death of the victims and called the event “a hateful murder of the faithful”.

Furthermore, he expressed his “shock and sadness” at the “frightening attack” and promised “eternal punishment for executioners here on earth and in the hereafter”.

Pope Francis also echoed what happened. In a statement from the pontiff’s editorial office, he lamented “the death of dozens of faithful” and reported “praying for them”.

Finally, it was the governor of the state of Ondo, of which the attacked city is a part, who noted on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened by the unprovoked attack and the murder of innocent people of Owo, in adoration in the Catholic church of San Francesco, today, “he said

He added: “The vile and satanic attack is a calculated attack on the peace-loving people of the Owo Kingdom who have enjoyed relative peace over the years,” he said.
