At least 50 people were killed and others injured in an attack by gunmen at a Catholic church in Nigeria’s Ondo state at a mass Sunday.
At a hospital in Owo, a city in southwestern Nigeria, a doctor told Reuters that at least 50 bodies were transported to the FMC (Federal Medical Center) in Owo and St. louis
President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attack, calling it “heinous”. The identity and purpose of the attackers was not immediately clear.
Local media said gunmen opened fire on church worshipers and detonated explosives. Among the dead are women and children.
Funmilayo Ibukun Odunlami, spokesman for the Ondo police, said there was an incident at the San Francisco Catholic Church in Owo and that the police will issue a new statement soon.
Africa’s most populous country witnessed ransom attacks and kidnappings by armed gangs, especially in the northwest. Such attacks are rare in southwestern Nigeria.
Ondo Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu interrupted his trip to the capital Abuja and returned to Ondo after the attack.
“We will use all available resources to hunt down and pay those responsible,” he said in a statement.
