Funmilayo Ibukun Odunlami, spokesman for the Ondo police, said there was an incident at the San Francisco Catholic Church in Owo and that the police will issue a new statement soon.

Africa’s most populous country witnessed ransom attacks and kidnappings by armed gangs, especially in the northwest. Such attacks are rare in southwestern Nigeria.

Ondo Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu interrupted his trip to the capital Abuja and returned to Ondo after the attack.

“We will use all available resources to hunt down and pay those responsible,” he said in a statement.
