A Russian general has been killed in eastern Ukraine, adding to Moscow’s high-level military losses, a Russian state media journalist reported on Sunday.

The report, published by correspondent Alexander Sladkov on the messaging app Telegram, did not specify exactly when and where Major General Roman Kutuzov was killed.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not immediately comment.

Russian forces stepped up their offensive to seize Sievierodonetsk, a major city in eastern Ukraine’s Donbass region, after failing to capture the capital, Kiev.

Russia classifies military deaths as state secrets, even in peacetime, and has not updated official casualty figures in Ukraine since March 25, when it said 1,351 Russian soldiers had been killed since the start of its military action on February 24.

Russia said it was conducting a “special military operation” designed to demilitarize Ukraine and free its Russian-speaking population from threatening nationalists. Ukraine and Western countries reject Russia’s claims as a pretext for invasion.

The UK’s Ministry of Defense said on Monday that Russia has suffered significant casualties among middle- and low-ranking officials in Ukraine.
