The situation for Ukrainian forces in Severodonetsk, a strategic city in the east of the country and the scene of heavy clashes with Russian troops, is “serious”, the regional governor said on Monday.
“The fighting is intense in Severodonetsk. Our defenders managed to save half the city by counterattack, but the situation has only gotten worse for us,” the governor of the Lugansk region, Sergei Gaidai, told Ukrainian television channel 1+1.
According to Gaidai, the bombings in Severodonetsk and Lyssychansk, a strategic neighboring city for “maintenance of the defense line”, became more intense.
“The Russians, with their usual scorching ground tactics, are destroying everything, there is nothing left to defend,” he accused.
The industrial hub is still the largest Ukrainian-controlled concentration in the Lugansk region, where Russian troops have been slowly advancing in recent weeks after being withdrawn or deported from other parts of Ukrainian territory, such as the outskirts of the capital, Kiev.
The Russian military has been trying to seize the entire Donbass, a name describing the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine, which since 2014 has been partially controlled by pro-Moscow separatists.
