France has recorded a series of attacks for months, with injections administered during parties and nightclubs in different parts of the country. The first suspect was arrested this weekend, but authorities have yet to identify the substance injected into the victims.
The suspect was arrested after allegedly stung by about 20 people, almost all women, during a concert on Friday night (3). The arrest took place during the recording of a program of the main French broadcaster TF1 television channel, which was filmed on the beach of Mourillon in Toulon, in the southeast of the country.
When the first victims came forward, the incident sparked a riot and the police intervened. The alleged author of the injections was identified by two participants, who claimed on the recording that they saw the suspect with a syringe and would try to prick them.
“Several complaints have already been made,” said prosecutor Samuel Finielz. According to the judge, the man was charged with “armed assault”. [a agulha] pre-designed”.
The suspect, a 20-year-old male, was born in Tunisia and was supposed to be in an irregular situation in France, according to preliminary information. Unemployed, already passed the police and convicted of domestic violence in 2020.
The magistrate stated that the Tunisian would be temporarily detained and said, “He is objecting to the facts, but in the light of the complaints submitted, the Prosecutor’s Office thought that there were enough charges.” If found guilty, the penalty could be up to 5 years in prison.
On Sunday, seven victims passed a medical examination. The results of the analyzes will be known next week. The victims did not report any serious symptoms, except for a security guard who was hospitalized at the scene. “She felt sick, but we still haven’t been able to determine whether it was related to a harmful substance being injected into the syringe or to the stressful situation she had just experienced,” Finielz says.
Injections in arms, thighs and even ankles
A wave of mysterious needles started in April when young people complained about needlestick attacks in bars, festivals and clubs in different parts of the country. More than a hundred complaints were registered in the cities of Lille, Béziers, Nantes, Rennes, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Nancy, Lyon, Besançon, Valence and Toulouse. The victims, who systematically found needlestick marks on their arms, thighs, hips, shoulders and even ankles, experienced symptoms such as dizziness, muscle pain, nausea and loss of balance.
Authorities have yet to identify the substance given to the victims. Was the hypothesis of the use of GHB, known as the “rape drug”, quickly rejected because tests were negative for this substance? which do not need to be injected and are usually placed discreetly in a glass. Victims inadvertently swallow the product with the drink.
So far, nothing to suggest that the man arrested in Toulon had anything to do with events in the rest of the country.
